Expense Deduction Guide

Section 44ADA vs Regular Books

Section 44ADA allows professionals (including content creators) with income up to ₹50 lakhs to claim 50% of gross receipts as deemed expenses without maintaining books of accounts. This is beneficial if your actual expenses are less than 50% of income. However, if you have significant expenses (equipment, team, studio), maintaining books and claiming actual deductions often results in lower taxes.

Equipment Depreciation

Equipment purchases cannot be claimed as full expenses in one year. Instead, you claim depreciation: Computers/laptops at 40% per year, cameras and video equipment at 15% per year (Written Down Value method). Buy equipment before September 30 to claim full year depreciation.

Expense Categories

100% Deductible

Documentation Best Practices

  • Maintain digital copies of all invoices and receipts (GST invoices preferred)
  • For team payments: Deduct TDS, file quarterly returns, issue Form 16A
  • Travel expenses: Keep tickets, hotel bills, event registration proof
  • Home office: Calculate proportionate area (room size / total house area)
  • Software: Annual plans often cheaper and easier to track than monthly
